The new OFW ID received countless reactions online because of its design that features the photo of President Rodrigo Duterte.
Department of Labor and Employment secretary Silvestre Bello III finally released an official statement regarding the issue. According to him, they are open to reconstruct the design of the OFW ID.
However, Bello insisted that they are still receiving positive feedback coming from the majority of OFWs.
“We have to consider the reaction from the public. We are open to changing the design.” Says Bello. “But, so far, OFWs are not complaining about it.”
Though many sees nothing wrong with the design, others still questions why the President’s image is clearly visible in the OFW ID.
This new OFW ID were first issued to OFW returnees at Clark Airport last December 7.
It can be recalled that this design is totally different from the previous design which was shown to the public during its launch in July.
When asked whether President Duterte knows something about the new design, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque Jr. said that the president was not aware of this.
“Hindi ba pati ang mga pictures niya sa mga [government] offices pinapalitan niya ng mga heroes? I don’t think he knew about this,” he said.
Bello also stressed that OFW IDs are free and the production costs were shouldered by the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA).
Many OFWs are rooting to get their hands to this OFW ID because of its advantages like travel tax exemption and terminal fee.
