SSS eyeing to actualize a mandatory coverage for Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs)
The Social Security System (SSS) here in the Philippines is currently eyeing to actualize a mandatory coverage for Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) by approaching and seeking for support from lawmakers.
This mandatory coverage of SSS seeks to broaden its members’ reach at the same time give security protection to OFWs.
Emmanuel F. Dooc, SSS President and Chief Executie Officer, said that this expansion is included in of the added provisions of the proposed charter amendment the pension fund which is currently being pushed in the legislative sector.
By implementing this mandatory coverage, he said that it would become a method of saving-up for the future for these OFWs and it would add more numbers of members in the pension fund that supports SSS’ goal to create a universal coverage.
The case is that many OFWs are registered SSS members, because of their previous jobs here in the Philippines, but no longer contribute since their migration. But in most cases, these OFWs will regret this choice in the future because of not being able to fully utilize the benefits that SSS provides like SSS Salary and Housing Loans.
